Age: 48
Hometown: Channapattana
Branch:
Channapattana
Family: husband, three sons, one daughter
Loan Cycle: 5th
Prior to receiving a Grameen Koota loan, Saleem Banu stayed at home, while her husband worked as a day laborer at a handicrafts factory. Despite her poor health condition, she took a small loan to help her husband’s career. He was able to purchase his own materials and sell his handicrafts to buyers in Bangalore.
After her second loan, the family was able to secure a one-year lease for their home. The family is now using the Grameen Koota loans to expand their business, increase consumption and save money for their home.
Saleema’s husband has established good relationships with handicrafts buyers and receives large orders for wooden bangles and ornaments, making a margin of Rs. 2 – 3 for each product. The loans his wife receives have improved his social status in his neighborhood and he is thankful to Grameen Koota for that. Initially, many community members opposed Grameen Koota, but he spoke positively of the organization and promoted its reputation in the area.
“Grameen Koota has helped me improve my social status in the village
and gain respect.”
